LATROBE CRICKET CLUB Won by 85 runs

Match report Following two close defeats where the Demons let themselves down for 5-over periods with the ball, Latrobe were keen to get a win on the board against Mowbray in Round 1 of the Greater Northern League.

Getting a win would not be an easy thing however, with Mowbray the reigning 3-time NTCA Premiers. Under grey skies with a seaming pitch Mowbray elected to bowl first after winning the toss.

This move paid dividends early for Mowbray, removing Callan Morse (4) and Scott Read (0)early. Media favourites the Keep brothers then set about righting the ship, adding 42 runs for the third wicket, before Trent was trapped in front for 14. Ryan (42) and Marc Simonds (28) then added a further 62 runs with a good display of placement, patience and effective running between the wickets.

With a run-rate over 4 for the first half of the innings it looked like the Demons would post over 200, but the loss of Ryan Keep and Simonds, plus other Latrobe middle-order players had the Demons scratching for runs once again. However, an enterprising innings by Matt Clarke (19), combining with Tim Hayes (6) for a 22-run partnership steered the Demons to 10-175, a competitive total in the heavy conditions.

After the lunch break the Demons new-ball pairing of Dion Parsons (1-21) and Tim Hayes (2-18) had Mowbray under immediate pressure. Returning after a 7-year absence, Hayes bowled with good control and will certainly be a very handy addition.

The real star with the ball was Josh Squibb, who found the swinging, seaming conditions to his liking. In a terrific six-over spell Squibb took 3-16, including the prized wicket of Clinton Reid. This young man continues to benefit from his hard work at training and improvements in his technique to be a very effective A-Grade bowler.

Latrobe continued to pile the pressure on Mowbray in the field, attacking the ball and cutting off numerous scoring opportunities. Dion Parsons typified this, attacking a ball inside the circle and throwing down the stumps at the non-striker's end to dismiss Jerome Illingworth.

As rain set-in the Demons were well ahead on Duckworth-Lewis but the rain cleared long enough for the match to be won outright, with Ryan Keep (2-10) cleaning up the tail for Latrobe's first win for the season.

Hopefully this will be the first of many wins for this young side. There is great potential in the group, but ultimately their performance will come down to their continued work-ethic, consistency and training effort.
