Match report In a much-improved performance Latrobe's A-Reserve side were narrowly defeated by the Devonport Orions at Devonport Oval on Saturday.

Thankful to be back on turf, skipper Matt Perry was happy to bat first on a patchy wicket. Things started well with Clint Donohue (14) and Kodie Clarke (6) putting on 25 runs for the first wicket, but things fell apart for a while and soon the Demons were looking down the barrel of a huge loss, slumping to 6-35.

Demon veterans Steven Adkins (53) and Stephen French (17) then added 47 for the 7th wicket, and the rest of the tail wagged, with Anthony Broomhall (8), Nathan Dennis (5) and Sam Arrell (10) helping Adkins resurrect the Latrobe innings in the later overs. The Demons finished with 147, their highest total for the season so far.

In the Orions' innings Latrobe started shakily, bowling numerous wides. Nathan Dennis (0-15) and Matt Perry (1-25) set about adding some pressure to the Devonport batsmen and bowling dot-balls, while Kodie Clarke (2-34) bowled a terrific 10-over spell to keep Latrobe in the game.

With the run-rate slowing Stephen French (1-31) bowled an aggressive spell and Clint Donohue (0-19 off 9) had the Demons thinking they could pull off an unlikely victory heading into the final ten overs, but some late hitting from Kevin Pearce helped the Orions get over the line.

Latrobe would be left ruing the quick wickets lost when batting, and the 34 wides they bowled, but could feel positive about their best performance for the season. The key to this team's success for the rest of the season will be players training regularly and working hard together to improve their games.

Thanks must go to Stephen French and Anthony Broomhall who filled-in at late notice after injuries forced changes to the A-Grade and A-Reserve sides. Both men performed well and we thank them for their support.
