Burnie-Yeoman v LATROBE CRICKET CLUB 1st Grade on Sun 19 Oct 2008 at 11.00am
LATROBE CRICKET CLUB Won By 119 runs

Match report In a match transferred to Wynyard, Burnie-Yeoman won the toss and elected to bat. This proved to be an error in judgement, as Latrobe new-ball pair Clint Donohue and Dion Parsons had the Emus under pressure immediately. Parsons bowled well into a stiff breeze, while Donohue bowled with exceptional control, finishing with the figures of 2-29 from 10 overs.

After some early wickets the Emus steadied through Aaron McCall and Nathan Hudson, before some brilliant fielding from James Wescombe saw Hudson run out. It was then Brad Green who stepped up with the ball, almost unplayable at times as he bowled unchanged into the wind to record the excellent figures of 3-15 from 10 overs. Green was Latrobe's best players in the one-dayers last year and it seems he is ready to do it again this year.

In a clever ploy James Wescombe bowled second change and terrorised the middle and lower order of the Emus, taking two wickets, before skipper Paul Dickson wrapped up the innings in his first over. Burnie-Yeoman had been dismissed for just 77! Coach Shane Wootton was no doubt pleased with the fielding effort.

Latrobe's achilles heel last year was its batting, but right from the start it gave an indication that this would not be the case in 2008/09. Paul Dickson (31) and Callan Morse (35) looked comfortable at the crease and constantly rotated the strike with clever singles. Dickson looked like a ready-made opener and he should thrive on leading from the front. Morse has increased his strength in the off season and will be a dangerous player this year, able to attack and defend skilfully.

After an opening partnership of 72, Dickson was dismissed, followed shortly by Morse. Nathan Avery (25) showed he was in good form, elegantly hitting the gaps, while James Wescombe (31) demonstrated his quick hands and power in hitting or clearing the boundary on several occasions. Brad Green lasted just one ball, misjudging a single and was run out with a direct hit.

With the game won, it was up to Ryan Keep and Steven Adkins to guide Latrobe to more bonus points without losing a wicket. Adkins knocked around singles, while Keep indicated he was ready to lead the team's batting this year with 53 not out. His clean striking down the ground looked ominous!

At the end of 50 overs the Demons had amassed 5-196 and had emerged victorious in Round 1 for the first time in many years. With great training sessions leading up to the game and a new attitude thanks to Shane Wootton, Latrobe looked ready to once again be a force in 2008/09.
