LATROBE CRICKET CLUB 1st Grade v Wynyard on Sat 25 Oct 2008 at 11.00am
LATROBE CRICKET CLUB Won by 26 runs
Match report
After a first-up win Latrobe were keen to keep on rolling in Round 2, with a home game against Wynyard. Batting first, Wynyard were in early trouble with both Clint Donohue and Dion Parsons taking early wickets.
Wynyard had to fight very hard for all their runs as all of Latrobe's bowlers were economical. Paul Dickson and Brad Green did a magnificent job through the middle overs, and there was cause for celebration as 15 year-old Jamie Aherne took his first A-Grade wicket in dismissing Corey Gleeson. In the most promising sign Dion Parsons showed he was ready to step up as a senior bowler, taking 4 wickets in a miserly spell of 9 overs costing only 14 runs. The Demons had restricted Wynyard to a very gettable 149.
In reply, all of Latrobe's top four made a start again. With the dismissal of Callan Morse for 12, Paul Dickson and Nathan Avery added 59 for the second wicket. Dickson again showed he had returned to form with the bat in making 33, and Avery once again showed he is a class batsman at this level making 34. James Wescombe, relishing the chance to concentrate more on his batting made 41 in another promising innings.
With the target in sight Latrobe did not take too many risks, with the only hiccups the cheap dismissals of Ryan Keep (0) and Steven Adkins (3). After passing the Wynyard total Brad Green (19 not out) and Matt Clarke (5 not out) guided the Demons to a 50-over total of 6-175, sealing a 26 run victory. This was the ideal start to the season for Latrobe and gave them confidence going into the Greater Northern series.
