Launceston v LATROBE CRICKET CLUB A-Grade on Sat 29 Nov 2008 at 11.00am
LATROBE CRICKET CLUB Lost by 60 runs

Match report Latrobe travelled to Launceston to take on the Lions, and were playing for a spot in the Greater Northern League Semi-Finals. The weather put a dampener on things early as the players had to wait for the pitch surrounds and ground to dry. Eventually play got underway with a 34-over match, and Launceston elected to bat first.

Things started well with Clint Donohue bowling over the dangerous Andy Belsak for just 2, and the Lions were 1-4. In the absence of Dion Parsons skipper Paul Dickson took the new ball and "Mr Reliable" again bowled well, conceding only 17 runs from his 7 overs. However, Latrobe's nemesis Jade Selby got settled and was soon into the Demons attack, taking our pace bowlers for a run a ball. As Selby continued on his march to reach 89, part-timer Nathan Avery was brought into the attack and made an immediate impact, removing both Selby (89) and Ross Clayton (27) to put the brakes on the Lions. Avery finished with the best figures, taking 3-20 from 7 overs. James Wescombe performed the role of finishing off the innings, and did this admirably, taking 3-44 and showing why he is a very dangerous "death" bowler. The Lions eventually reached 9-174 from their 34 overs, a figure that could have been much more if not for Avery's heroics.

With the Demons requiring over five an over to win, it was always going to be a hard ask. Losing Dickson (7), Callan Morse (7) and Avery (0) early did not help matters and Latrobe were soon well behind the asking rate. However, James Wescombe continued his good start to the year with the bat, making a composed 32 to help right the ship for the Demons. His dismissal saw Andrew Boon join Ryan Keep at the crease, and the pair combined for an unbeaten 56 run partnership. In a good sign for Latrobe's batting depth, Boon looked very comfortable at the crease and proved he would be a handy acquisition this season. While never going to reach the target, the Demons did not throw their wickets away, finishing on 4-114, with Keep 17 not out and Boon 43 not out. The Demons had lost their first match for the season, but there were still some good things to come out of the game.
