Wynyard v LATROBE CRICKET CLUB 2nd Grade on Sat 25 Oct 2008 at 11.00am
LATROBE CRICKET CLUB Won by 56 runs
Match report
Latrobe's defence of its A-Reserve Premiership began against Wynyard at Wynyard Showgrounds in Round 1. After winning the toss, Wynyard elected to bowl first, leaving Josh Gadsby and Warwick Jones to face the new ball.
Jones was the aggressor in this partnership, punishing anything short of a length as well as playing some nice cover drives. Gadsby seemed content to play the anchor role until he flashed at a wide one to be caught for 5. Jones and Nick Cornell then combined, rotating the strike well for a time. Jones was eventually dismissed for a solid 29, looking in good form after not playing much cricket in the last two years.
Cornell looked an assured no. 3, running well between the wickets and technically correct. Matt Nicolle on the other hand, emerging from retirement, looked a bit edgy running between the wickets and could not find the gap. Both were dismissed in quick succession, Cornell for 16 and Nicolle for 12. Trent Keep came in at 5 and struggled to hit the gaps against the spin of Declan West and his frustration led to a stumping on 1.
Latrobe were 5-82 after 35 overs and it looked like they might do well to make 150. However, in the next 11 overs Josh Dennis and David Squibb added an incredible 115 runs! Dennis, after a year off due to injury, pounced on anything outside his off stump and rotated the strike with clever singles in a good comeback innings of 33. Squibb, as if his mere presence made Wynyard's bowlers crumble, destroyed the bowling, hitting an amazing 11 fours and 2 sixes in an innings of 67 lasting 45 minutes. The tide of the match had turned, and Latrobe scrambled through the final overs to finish with 9-220.
Wynyard would have to bat very well in order to reach Latrobe's total. They received some luck when the side's most economical bowler Nathan Dennis injured his leg in his second over and could not bowl again in the innings. However, Patrick Fitzgerald, the reigning A-Reserve Bowling Award winner kept the pressure on Wynyard and got the first breakthrough.
Matt Nicolle stepped up to bowl first change and in between a few erratic deliveries did a good job for captain David Squibb, taking 1-14 from 6 overs. Marc Simonds then bowled up the hill 10 consecutive overs, taking 2 wickets in an encouraging display. His last five overs in particular were outstanding as he deceived batsmen with flight and well landed googlies.
With limited bowling options David Squibb (1-25) and Josh Dennis (0-29) bowled throught the middle overs and created some chances, before Matt Perry cleaned up the middle and lower order with a mix of well flighted and fast, flat off spinners. On a hat-trick at one stage, Perry looks like a handy pick-up for the Demons.
The Wynyard team were bowled out in the last over for 164, handing the Demons a 56 run victory. Latrobe were content with the win as their bowling stocks were a little depleted, but the fielding standards (including a great outfield catch by Warwick Jones)and batting plans were executed very well. It was the ideal start for Latrobe.
