LATROBE CRICKET CLUB A-Reserve v Devonport on Sat 01 Nov 2008 at 11.00am
LATROBE CRICKET CLUB Lost by 58 runs

Match report On an absolute belter at Latrobe, Devonport won the toss and elected to bat. The Orions started cautiously, and soon the Demons had their first wicket thanks to Patrick Fitzgerald catching the edge of Tim Moore's bat to present Trent Keep with the easiest of catches. Things got a lot harder for Latrobe after that, as Chris Lindsay and Andrew Woolley combined for a good partnership for the Orions. Through the middle overs the Orions increased their run-rate, kept in check only through some good bowling from Matt Perry (0-35 from 10) and Marc Simonds (2-43 from 10). Both spinners showed excellent control, with Simonds in particular doing well to bowl during the final overs of the innings.

Fitzgerald was the pick of Latrobe's bowlers, taking 1-17 from 10 economical overs, while Michael Bishop picked up a couple of late wickets using changes of pace to finish with 2-36. After 50 overs Devonport finished with 5-179, a total the Demons thought they could reach on a very good batting wicket.

However, Latrobe were soon under pressure, losing Josh Gadsby (4) and Michael Bishop (4) in the first few overs. Warwick Jones (9), Josh Dennis (1) and Matt Perry (1) followed soon after and the Demons were in big trouble at 5-25. Trent Keep joined David Squibb at the crease and performed some consolidation, making the bowlers come to them and hitting the gaps well. Keep showed impressive maturity in making 11, combining with Squibb to add 39 runs before he was dismissed.

Squibb led the batting well, being extremely severe on anything short of a length, particularly from Sam Mazurek. He and Patrick Fitzgerald (17) added 54 for the eighth wicket in a very effective partnership, keeping Latrobe in the hunt for victory. Squibb made yet another half century (53), including nine fours and two sixes. However, once Squibb and Fitzgerald were dismissed the Latrobe lower order offered little resistance, as the Demons were bowled out for 121, a loss of 58 runs to the arch enemy.

Latrobe now has plenty to think about heading into the next game.
