LATROBE CRICKET CLUB 2nd Grade v Burnie-Yeoman on Sun 23 Nov 2008 at 11.00am
LATROBE CRICKET CLUB Won by 20 runs

Match report Having played a thrilling tie the week before, Latrobe and Burnie-Yeoman again squared off at Latrobe Recreation Ground. Burnie-Yeoman won the toss and elected to bat, as is the custom now at Latrobe with the great batting wickets on offer.

Burnie-Yeoman made an excellent start and had no worries seeing off the opening bowlers Patrick Fitzgerald (0-15) and Jamie Aherne (0-35). The introduction of David Squibb's stump to stump medium pacers soon saw results, with Squibb removing Elliot Stewart (18) and Nathan Revell (28), with the score 2-59. Squibb was miserly with 2-8 from 10 overs, with great support from new father Jason Sims, who took 1-23 from eight tidy overs.

The introduction of spin in the middle and late overs paid dividends for the Demons. Fourteen-year-old legspinner Marc Simonds took 4-42 from 9.2 overs, recording his best figures in 2nd Grade. However, his figures could have been much better with three dropped catches and a missed stumping. Part-time offspin bowler Nick "Caspa" Cornell took 3-25 to wrap up the tail, cleverly flighting his deliveries to induce false strokes. Burnie-Yeoman were dismissed for 155 in the 50th over.

In reply the Demons were in early trouble again. The top order had failed to fire so far this season, and Warwick Jones was dismissed with the total on 5. An attacking Josh Gadsby (18) combined with Matt Nicolle (7) to add 33 for the second wicket, but Latrobe were soon in trouble once again, losing Gadsby, Nicolle and Ben Dick (1) in quick succession, with the Demons struggling at 4-39. The evergreen David Squibb (13) joined Jason Sims at the crease and the pair added 31 runs for the fifth wicket until Squibb got a faint edge and was caught behind. Latrobe were 5-70 and the game was in the balance.

However, this was the last time the Emus had a sniff of victory. Sims and Nick Cornell took control of the game, playing every ball on its merits and hitting the gaps. In a long innings Sims began to tire, but Cornell managed to take more of the strike in an encouraging innings from the young Frimley import. The pair took the Demons past the Emus total and then set about chasing another bonus point at 175. This was achieved in the last over, thanks to some slog sweeps from Cornell for six. Latrobe finished at 5-175, with Sims recording 64 not out in a great first match innings, and Cornell 40. The pair had added 105 for the sixth wicket and ensured an important win for Latrobe.
