LATROBE CRICKET CLUB Lost by 40 runs

Match report Latrobe played host to Ulverstone in a match shortened to a one-dayer due to rain the previous week. Ulverstone won the toss and elected to bowl, but the Demons got off to a great start thanks to Warwick Jones (23) and Nick Cornell (18), who added 47 for the first wicket. However, both soon fell, joined by Simon Howard (0) and the Demons needed to consolidate again at 3-55. Matt Clarke was joined at the crease by Matt Nicolle, and they combined to add 29 runs for the 4th wicket. Clarke looked in good touch, making 26 before playing outside the line of a Jesse Creedon delivery and being bowled. Nicolle looked very scratchy and couldn't find the gaps, making 4. With both Clarke and Nicolle being dismissed with the score at 84 the Demons had handed the momentum back to Ulverstone. Only 50 from the ever reliable David Squibb helped the Demons mount any sort of defendable score as Latrobe finished at 9-164 from its 50 overs.

With the ball an inexperienced Demons bowling line-up did not have any joy against a strong Ulverstone batting line-up. Conceding far too many wides (30) certainly did not help, as Emmanuel Benjamin (78) and Ben Bott (57) added 153 for the first wicket, effectively ending the match. Jamie Aherne bowled well taking 1-30 from 10 overs, but could have had far better figures had he not bowled 10 wides. Aherne also contributed a run out, with a magnificent throw from the outfield catching Benjamin short of his ground. Ulverstone finished at 4-204, leaving the Demons with some work to do over Christmas - mainly in batting concentration and bowling accuracy.
