LATROBE CRICKET CLUB team
A-Grade
Coach :
Shane Wootton
Woot is a member of Sheffield Cricket Club's Team of the Half-Century, a former CNW Representative Team Coach and CNW Board Member. A highly-competitive former all-rounder with the Mountaineers, Wootton enters his second year at the helm of Latrobe Cricket Club. Last season he was able to unearth some new A-Grade players and no doubt will be looking for the club to make its mark with the same steely resolve he was known for throughout his career.
Captain :
Steven Adkins
RH Batsman, RA Medium. LCC Career Stats: 140 matches, 47 catches. 2428 runs @ 16.41, HS 197 not out. 53 wickets @ 14.32, BB 3-7. Latrobe's new A-Grade Captain is a versatile batsman capable of playing a number of roles. Adkins was the club's best batsman in the 2005/06 A-Grade Premiership season, punishing any short bowling and regularly making a contribution. He is the ultimate team player, a handy medium-pacer and deceptively agile fieldsman in the circle. After a lean couple of years with the bat, I'm tipping the captaincy to be just the tonic for Adkins to get back to his best.
Vice Captain :
Nathan Avery
RH Batsman, RA Slow-Medium. LCC Career Stats: 76 matches, 32 catches. 1510 runs @ 19.36, HS 102 not out. 28 wickets @ 13.00, BB 6-29. Avery steps up to the A-Grade Vice-Captaincy this season having developed into a linchpin of the Demons batting order in the last few seasons. He is a technically-correct batsman whose array of attacking strokes is improving with each season. After a season full of starts in 2008/09, no doubt Avery will be aiming to reach three figures on a few occasions this year. He is also an under-rated bowler with a slower ball that is hard to pick and is an accomplished catcher. Avery is a fine choice as Adkins' deputy this year.
Players
Jamie Aherne
RH Batsman, RA Fast-Medium.
LCC Career Stats: 54 matches, 17 catches.
485 runs @ 14.70, HS 57.
48 wickets @ 18.62, BB 4-18.
Jamie is an emerging all-rounder who took all before him in the Junior Colts competition last year, winning the club's batting and bowling awards. He bowls with good pace and possesses a good bouncer, while when batting his technique is improving all the time to compliment his range of attacking strokes. As an A-Reserve Premiership player and A-Grade debutant in the last two seasons, expect Aherne to take another step forward this season.
Michael Bishop
LH Batsman, LA Medium.
LCC Career Stats: 56 matches, 22 catches. 842 runs @ 23.39, HS 216. 103 wickets @ 18.43, BB 6-21.
Bish returns to the club this year after missing most of last season due to a change in his work circumstances, and will play a vital all-round role for the club. Having played a handful of games in A-Grade as a bowler, Bishop developed into a top-order batsman and new ball bowler in A-Reserve from 2006-2007. He was a member of back-to-back A-Reserve Premierships, striking a club record 216 in the Grand Final (not bad for his first century!). As a bowler he swings the ball both ways and should really now concentrate on establishing himself as a top A-Grade cricketer.
Matt Clarke
RH Batsman, Wicket-Keeper. LCC Career Stats: 98 matches, 77 catches, 6 stumpings. 1560 runs @ 18.14, HS 97. 14 wickets @ 27.50, BB 4-40. Clarke has played plenty of cricket for someone who is still only 19. He is a talented top/middle-order batsman able to play shots on either side of the wicket and is a great judge of a quick single. A fantastic athlete, Clarke is equally as comfortable in the field as he is behind the stumps. A young player with a great feel for the game, Clarke is a future leader at Latrobe and will be looking to build on the improved form with the bat that he demonstrated at the end of last season.
Josh Dennis
LH Batsman, RA Wrist Spin. LCC Career Stats: 48 matches, 16 catches. 641 runs @ 16.02, HS 64 not out. 33 wickets @ 18.06, BB 4-43. Dennis has been around a long time, but has been restricted by work and family commitments on occasions. In the run of games that he had in the second half of last season he showed he was certainly a quality batsman, making half-centuries in 2nd Grade and averaging 51 in 1st Grade. He is an attacking left-hand middle order batsman who is now much tighter defensively and able to bat to the situation. His wrist-spin is also quite handy and he has a great set of hands in the slips cordon. Should Dennis have a full season this year big things are expected of him.
Nathan Dennis
RH Batsman, RA Medium-Fast. LCC Career Stats: 127 matches, 51 catches. 593 runs @ 9.12, HS 33. 221 wickets @ 17.12, BB 5-12. Dennis is a long-time player at the club and is a great competitor. At the age of 19 he was involved in a work accident that left him with a permanent disability, yet he worked his way back to playing 1st and 2nd Grade cricket. In the last two seasons Dennis has battled weight issues (i.e. being a big fatty!) but since the end of last season has dropped over 30 kilograms and is ready to once again go after the opposition batsmen. A tireless medium-fast bowler and dogged lower-order batsman, Dennis will once again work on helping develop the club's younger players while leading by example.
Paul Dickson
RH Batsman, RA Wrist Spin. LCC Career Stats: 142 matches, 65 catches. 2006 runs @ 14.86, HS 100 not out. 157 wickets @ 22.59, BB 6-25. Dickson is a Latrobe person through and through. The longest-serving A-Grade Captain in the club's history, he has elected to concentrate on his role as a player this season. A versatile batsman, Dickson found form towards the end of last season, making a memorable maiden A-Grade century in the last roster match - a special moment for this spiritual leader of LCC. His unconventional wrist-spin still perplexes many batsmen, but above all else this man is a born competitor. Dickson is a great role model for any young cricketer coming into the A-Grade side.
Clint Donohue
RH Batsman, RA Medium-Fast. LCC Career Stats: 106 matches, 37 catches. 802 runs @ 12.15, HS 52 not out. 210 wickets @ 16.84, BB 8-16. Donohue was the tormentor of many batsmen as he rose through the ranks at Latrobe, winning multiple bowling awards in the lower grades. His swinging deliveries with the new ball often have batsmen in trouble, particularly early in the season. He is an aggressive lower-order batsman who probably doesn't give himself enough credit for the ability he has with the bat. The key to Donohue making a real impact in A-Grade cricket is hard work - should he do all that he can to improve his game the results will follow.
Ryan Keep
RH Batsman, RA Off Spin, Wicket-Keeper. Happy is a tall, powerful middle order batsman. He was a member of the 2005-06 A-Grade Premiership team. Football commitments and injuries have meant rare appearances for the Demons in recent seasons, but this aggressive batsman looks poised to return after Christmas to give the 1st Grade middle order some more depth.
Trent Keep
RH Batsman, Wicket-Keeper. LCC Career Stats: 81 matches, 42 catches, 10 stumpings. 846 runs @ 18.00, HS 72 not out. 14 wickets @ 21.43, BB 2-25. Keep has been around LCC for a long time and has impressed everyone with his commitment to improvement. Last season he made his A-Grade debut, impressing everyone with how quickly he adjusted to A-Grade cricket, and how difficult he was to dismiss! Trent shared the Most Improved award with best mate Marc Simonds, and this former 2nd Grade Premiership player must be aiming to play a full season of A-Grade cricket in 2009/10 as a keeper-batsman.
Colin Lamont
LH Batsman, RA Off Spin. LCC Career Stats: 43 matches, 6 catches. 1321 runs @ 27.52, HS 128. 2 wickets @ 25.50, BB 2-41. Colin is back at the club this season after spending the past two seasons at MVCA club East Devonport Devils. He brings with him a wealth of experience as a former TCA player, A-Grade Premiership player and batting award winner at Latrobe. His class, aggression and outright talent at the top of the order could be just the tonic for a Demons batting line-up that struggled for long periods last season.
Callan Morse
RH Batsman, LA Wrist Spin. LCC Career Stats: 105 matches, 21 catches. 1423 runs @ 16.36, HS 73. 106 wickets @ 18.63, BB 6-37. Morse has been around the club for a long time and has been involved in a 1st Grade and 2nd Grade Premiership in the last few seasons. Season 2008/09 was a breakout one for Morse, winning the A-Grade Batting award and looking quite comfortable as an opening batsman. Fiercely determined, Morse was not satisfied with his season and will be focused on converting more of his starts into big scores this year. Morse's bowling should never be under-estimated either, with his wrist spin having massive potential with an impressive array of different deliveries already evident. Morse will be a key player at Latrobe this year.
Dion Parsons
RH Batsman, RA Fast-Medium. LCC Career Stats: 104 matches, 30 catches. 351 runs @ 8.77, HS 27. 177 wickets @ 15.67, BB 5-20. Parsons emerged as one of the premier new-ball bowlers in the A-Grade competition last season, winning the club's A-Grade Bowling award. A CNW representative, he troubled all batsmen in the Greater Northern One-Day competition with his line and length and surprising pace. He thrives on bowling long spells and is not fussed bowling into the wind when asked to by his captain. Parsons' batting is also developing quite nicely, and coach Shane Wootton has made no secret of the fact that he wants Dion to develop into an all-rounder from this season.
Matt Perry
RH Batsman, RA Off-Spin. LCC Career Stats: 15 matches, 6 catches. 143 runs @ 15.89, HS 57. 11 wickets @ 18.64, BB 4-28. Perry settled in well at Latrobe in his first season, earning games in A-Grade in the one-day series and doing his best despite limited opportunities. In 2nd Grade he continued to develop his game, with a great feel for tempo when bowling, changing his flight and variations to suit the situation. It is with the bat that he really emerged, making a half-century and developing the application that should see him emerge as a good all-round talent with the club this year and beyond.
Marc Simonds
RH Batsman, RA Leg Spin. LCC Career Stats: 31 matches, 8 catches. 212 runs @ 11.73, HS 39. 38 wickets @ 24.82, BB 6-17. Simonds has completed two seasons at Latrobe, already winning a 2nd Grade Premiership and a Most Improved award at the club. This exciting leg-spinner got a taste of A-Grade cricket last year, acquitting himself well and taking two wickets. Marc is an attacking bowler, not afraid to toss the ball up and spin it hard. To take the next step with the ball he must work on his groupings, but there is a huge up-side to this young man. With the bat he is dangerous against anything on his pads, and with further work on his technique and application will be a fine player. A definite player to watch.
Clinton Viney
LH Batsman, RA Fast-Medium. LCC Career Stats: 17 matches, 5 catches. 311 runs @ 17.28, HS 62. 28 wickets @ 21.75, BB 5-20. Viney returns to Latrobe this season after successful stints at Sheffield and Gawler over the past few years. He brings with him success in big games and his enthusiasm should set a great example for all players. Viney is an aggressive middle-order batsman capable of tearing an attack apart, while with the ball he is deceptively quick and is capable of striking with the new ball. Latrobe is thrilled to welcome Dinga back into the fold and trust he will be a valuable addition to the club for years to come.
